One of the more strenuous hikes is the Fernie Ridge walk. This is an all-day adventure that gives you great views of the Rocky Mountain Trench, as well as the Front Range of Alberta. If you want to experience some of Fernie's history at the same time, the Coal Creek Heritage Trail is a nice choice. The hike follows the now abandoned Fernie, Morrissey, and Michel rail tracks to Coal Creek, which is now a ghost town. You can still see the entrance to the first coal mine to exist here in the Elk Valley. If the day is particularly hot, the Fairy Creek Falls trail has a nice reward at the end. The hike is relatively easy, and takes you through meadows and a bit of forest before reaching the water.
If you're now ready to come out and experience the nature that Fernie has to offer, you'll need a place to stay. A good choice would be the Powder Cowboy Dude Ranch. This lodge offers a cozy, comfortable, and economic way to relax after a long day out and about. Once you’re done hiking, enjoy all the other activates here in Fernie, like golfing, fine-dining, and live music. Don't forget to come back to Powder Cowboy in the winter, when the resort also offers great backcountry Cat Skiing Canada.
