Hiking Through Fernie

In these summer months, as we await that first flurry of snow that marks the beginning of this year's cat skiing and snowboarding season, boredom can set in. However, it doesn't have to. The same great mountains and trails that bring snow enthusiasts from all over the world to Fernie, British Columbia every year, also offer great enjoyment when explored on foot. The trails here are seemingly endless, and can take you on quite an adventure. Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll in and around town, or you want some real mountain adventure, Fernie has something for everyone.

The network of trails that exist within the city itself is quite amazing. Take a walk along the Elk River dyke to explore the city from north to south. Or head over to Mountview Park, which has a charming loop trail with nice views of the river, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. To get even more stunning views, you will of course have to head up those mountains. Helicopter skiing. You don't have to go too far on the Fairy Creek Falls trail, however, for a different look at Fernie.

Another option is to head over to the Cedar Valley to access all the trails that are available from Island Lake Lodge. Island Lake is also a pleasurable place to stay. Though they are primarily a catskiing operation, the lodge welcomes visitors year round with luxurious accommodations and even better food. If you like to ski or snowboard, but find yourself exploring the wilderness around Fernie on foot, you'll surely be imagining what things look like when they're covered in snow. Epic is how it is, as the best backcountry around is Island Lake's 7,000 acres of pure powder bliss. Whether you want to hike or ski through Fernie, Island Lake is the best place to stay. Be sure to book soon, as their ever popular accommodations fill up fast.
