New Mountain Biking Trail Opens In Fernie

This weekend saw the opening of the Porky Blue downhill trail here in Fernie, British Columbia. World renowned for its backcountry skiing in the winter, Fernie is also a great place for mountain biking and other outdoor summer activities. One of the great things about mountain biking in Fernie is that there are so many trails, meaning there is something for everyone. Porky Blue continues in that spirit, and has cross country sections as well has the downhill part. The trail is a diversion of the Porcipine Rim trail, and lasts about four hours. In celebration of the opening, more than 140 bikers took place in a ride this weekend to christen the trail, which benefited the Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club, the builders of the trail. Fernie truly is a mountain biker’s paradise, with more than 50 trails of all kinds. If you've been looking for somewhere to test your new bike, or are looking to just enjoy a day in the outdoors, Fernie has what you need. If you decide on a vacation here, there are many other great activities to enjoy, and many places to stay. The two best lodges here in Fernie are Powder Cowboy,  and Island Lake Lodge. Both lodges are snow cat operators in the winter, but they also keep the lodges open throughout the summer.

Powder Cowboy offers an interesting twist by turning their lodge into a dude ranch during the summer. Enjoy cozy log cabins, and a real western saloon. Island Lake offers a place to stay for the more luxurious vacation. Once you've visited during the summer, you'll want to come back in the winter. From December until April both lodges offer spectacular backcountry snow cat skiing on the epic reaches of the Lizard Range. Whether you come now for the mountain biking, or you prefer your mountains covered in white fluffy powder, Fernie is the place to be. Cat Skiing
