Fernie, British Columbia is located in the idyllic Canadian Rockies near the Lizard Range. One of the reasons that Fernie is a popular outdoor vacation spot in both the summer and the winter is the extensive network of trails that crisscross the area. These trails exist in large part due to the work and advocacy of the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club. What started off as a friendly group of skiers in the 1970's has turned into one of the more important community organizations in Fernie. The group maintains non-motorized trails throughout the area to help promote public access and public recreation in the area. What this means for visitors and locals alike is that no matter what time of year you visit, there are plenty of trails and wilderness to explore.
British Columbia is a hot spot for backcountry skiing of all types, and the terrain in and around Fernie, as well as over towards the Cedar Valley and the Island Lake Resort, doesn't disappoint. Not only is the terrain spectacular, with magnificent views all around, it also has great
snow cat boarding. Even though Fernie is at a relatively low elevation, it is located in an area of the Rockies where moist air off the Pacific meats the cold air blowing down from the Rockies, making for a great pack of powder. As such, activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are a great way to see the area.
Of course, most powder fans have a different idea of what to do with all that snow. Downhill skiing and
heli boarding in Fernie are also world-class. Here in Fernie, the best way to get into the backcountry is with the snow cats of
Island Lake or
Powder Cowboy. Their terrains are huge, but their tour space is limited, so book now if you want the best Fernie has to offer.
