TransRockies - Fernie Time Trial Complete
Posted - Mon, 08/09/2010 - 16:55
This weekend saw the start of the TransRockies mountain bike race. The annual race offers some of the most difficult mountain biking in the world, as racers make their way through the Canadian Rockies. This year, the race went back to its roots and kicked off in Fernie, British Columbia. Here the racers competed in a time trial for Day 1. The weather was unusually rainy, especially given the brilliant sunny days that Fernie has been experiencing recently. However, that didn't keep racers from putting up some good time results, nor did it keep the day from being a big success. Next, riders move on to neighboring Sparwood in a more than 70km long [2km of climbing] Stage 2. Catskiing
If the TransRockies have piqued your interest, and you want to check out the same trails that they were riding, now is a great time to visit Fernie. Even if you're not an avid mountain biker, there are plenty of trails available for all skill levels. For those that don't like mountain biking, but want to come enjoy the magnificent splendor of the wilderness in Fernie, there are plenty of other activities to do as well. When you do come visit Fernie, you'll need a place to stay. If you look for adventure and comfort in one stylish location, look no further than Island Lake Lodge, or Powder Cowboy.
Both lodges operate Cat Skiing tours in the winter, but are open in the summer as well. Powder Cowboy even turns its lodge into a Dude Ranch for the summer. They offer a unique western themed experience, complete with cozy log cabins, and a great Wild West style saloon. Island Lake offers a more typical, and more upscale, vacation. Gourmet food, world-class spa, luxurious rooms, and an amazing setting make Island Lake a great place to stay. Both lodges also have access to some truly spectacular backcountry skiing terrain, and offer excellent snow cat tours from December through April. If you come to check out the mountain biking, or for any of the other adventurous activities, keep these two lodges in mind for great accommodations. Heli skiing
