TransRockies Race Crosses the Great Divide

The TransRockies mountain bike race, one of the toughest races on earth, recently began its trek with a time trial stage here in Fernie, British Columbia. Stage three marked the race's cross over the Great Divide of the Canadian Rockies. Also known as the Continental Divide, this line of mountains that stretch across the Americas is what separates the rivers and watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from those that drain into the Atlantic or Arctic Oceans. As such, this stage of the race represents some of the toughest, wildest, and most remote mountain biking to be had. The race continues on to its eventual end in Canmore, Alberta.

There is a reason that the annual race starts in Fernie, and that is because of the amazing mountain biking that is available here all summer long. The trails here are truly top-notch, and while there are plenty of adventurous trails for the adrenaline junkies, there are also many trails for those looking to enjoy the wilderness. Fernie offers many great activities during the summer, and epic backcountry heli skiing in the winter.

No matter when you visit, you'll need a place to stay. To that end, Island Lake Lodge and Powder Cowboy are excellent options, year round. Island Lake is a luxurious upscale lodge nestled amongst the great wilderness. It offers a world-class spa and gourmet dining. Powder Cowboy turns their lodge into a Dude Ranch during the summer, but offers a western themed stay year round. Make sure to check out the Big Horn Saloon when you visit.

In the winter, both lodges offer great Catskiing BC tours, most of which are based in the Lizard Range. Island Lake boasts a fantastic 7,000 acre playground, while Powder Cowboy's covers 6,000 acres. Both offer great terrain, professional guides and access to all the B.C. snow you can dream of. No matter what time of year you decide to visit, book now for the best deals.
