Why Catskiing?
As the summer months meander on by, seemingly without end, one might be inclined to speculate as to what the winter will bring. Here in Fernie, British Columbia, winter is guaranteed to bring sweet, fluffy, and dry powder, as it does every year. Obviously there are plenty of resorts you can go to to have your fun, but if you really want the best, the only option is to go backcountry. Given that hiking into the backcountry is a pain, and doesn't really give you much variety, your only choices for getting to the good parts is to go by helicopter or snow cat. For many reasons, snow cat skiing is the best way to experience what Fernie B.C. and the Lizard Range have to offer the avid skier. Catskiing Canada
One of the biggest differences between the helicopter and the snow cat is price. However, there are many other aspects to consider as well. One of the big advantages of going backcountry with a snow cat is that you aren't grounded by the weather. The most common way that a helicopter vacation gets ruined is because the helicopter can't fly due to inclement weather. Another reason to go by snow cat is the relative peace and quiet. Helicopters are big noisy beasts, even inside. As a result, you can barely hear yourself think, let alone hold an interesting conversation. The opposite is the case in the snowcat. Not only are you and all your friends comfortably sitting in the back recounting the lines just carved, you're free to sit back, relax, and regain some much needed energy from the gourmet snacks that are typically available.
