The Magnificent Lizard Range

Here in Fernie, British Columbia, one of the main areas for backcountry skiing is the Lizard Range. Located just to the south-east of Fernie, the range is 19 miles wide and 27 miles long. This well known range reaches elevations as high as 7,743 feet and keeping up with the B.C. standards, also gets lots of dry, fluffy snow each year. The snowfall is usually about 350 inches annually, which means there is always plenty of fresh powder. If you're looking to go backcountry this year, you can't do better than a snow cat tour of the Lizard Range.

Kick Back And Relax With Powder Cowboy

Fernie, British Columbia, is an ideal place to go snowcat skiing. The backcountry is epic, the town is quaint, and, of course, there is that B.C. champagne powder to salivate over. Now, just because the snow is great, and the mountains are big, doesn't mean that just any catskiing operation will do. If you want the best of the best, visit Powder Cowboy. Their terrain is spread over 6,000 acres of steep chutes and great lines. The only problem with all that terrain is that you'll get tired, especially over a four day tour.

British Columbia Implements New Safety Regulations for Lift Towers

Due to the failure of a lift tower on a gondola in 2008 (Blackcomb's Excalibur Gondola), the British Columbia Safety Authority has implemented some new regulations to prevent a repeat incident. The BCSA concluded after its investigation of the incident that the tower failed due to ice jacking. This occurs when water enters a lift tower and freezes. As the water expands, the tower becomes unduly stressed and then buckles.
